So being referenced in an Associated Press article about human attachment to the Roomba, although not named by name, is pretty cool. Lots of newspapers, blogs, magazine sites had links to myroombud.com since we, of course, allow people to cloth their Roombas. The article said that the Georgia Tech professor who did the study became interested in the top of people and Roombas after seeing pictures of people puttting clothing on their Roombas ... hmm I wonder what pictures those were. What was really funny was when people writing articles and blogs based on the article stating that they did not want to put clothing on their Roomba. Now if that doesn't validate our costume covers, I don't know what does.

Well, Halloween is coming up soon, so why the heck don't you put a costume on your little Roomba. You wouldn't send your kids out trick or treating without a costume now would you?

myRoomBud in the Financial Times newspaper out in London. How cool is that. In the article called Robot maid with a mission to clean which was basically about the new iRobot Roomba, Paul Taylor wrote that "Someone has even set up a business making animal costumes for the device (www.myroombud.com)." Guess who that someone is? Us of course.

So how do we get an article in the Wall Street Journal. Now that would impress our papa.

So the Second Life of our SLoomba, that's a Second Life version of the iRobot Roomba, has just begun. We added a way to sign up for Second Life right from the myroombud.com web site. New avatars, that is what the little people in Second Life are called, will start right off at the SLoomba store. And this is just the beginning. Wouldn't it be cool to have your Roomba and SLoomba doing exactly the same thing in real live and Second Life? What about putting together a 3D social network of Roomba owners who can sit in a part watching their SLoombas run around just like doggie owners do on Sunday morning. We even could have SLoomba races in a maze set up at the IBM island in Second Life. Note: we did try this but the SLoomba does a much better vacuuming your rooms than running a maze.

So we decided it was time to build a Second Life version of the Roomba. Pretty cool. Using the algorithms in Joe Jones' book "Robot Programming - A Practical Guide to Behavior-Based Robotics" we programmed the SLoomba to act just like it's real life counterpart. myRoomBud and iRobot help out the Gates Elementary School PTO Auction in Acton, MA

It's that time of year again. Our elementary school is having their PTO auction to help raise money for teaching assistants, computers, library aids and other helpful things. Eventhough only two of the four co-founders of myRoomBud still go to Gates, we all feel a warm fuzzy feeling helping out. Roomba hop and roar - holy do do my Roomba is alive

Is the Roomba a robot or a live animal? Who cares. Watching our myRoomBud videos of Roomba hopping around with a Roobit the Frog costume on looks just like a live little critter. Roor the Tiger of course roars, stalks and pounces like a real tiger. Our kitty cat Tiger gets confused and thinks he's looking in a mirror. Our petite french maid RoomBette will be more than obliging to wiggle it's butt at you. With all the cool YouTube videos going around, we thought to dust off ours and begin to create our first TV / YouTube commercial staring the RoomBud. It is still in the works but may star Sunny the Penguin who we have to say has very happy feet when it runs around the house vacuuming.

Sunny the Penguin appeared out of nowhere riding a Roomba just like old St. Nick in his sleigh.

It must have been a long trip for Sunny, all the way from the South Pole to myRoomBud headquarters. I wonder if this is all about being PC. You know, how can you have a jolly old elf from the North Pole without representation from the South Pole. It's only fair. Hmmm can this be the start of a new thing? Wow it's been a whole year since myRoomBud started selling Roomba costumes. We have had a really fun time meeting the founders of iRobot Helen Grener and Colin Angle, selling RoomBuds to people in Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii (we need to set up a business trip to visit our customers don't you think) , read about ourselves in magazines, blogs, newspapers and books, almost got on a few TV shows, guest lecturing at an MBA class, talking with authors, ... what did I leave out ...

myRoomBud says "No More Naked Scoobas!"

Finally after a recent visit to the the New England Aquarium to see the fishies and oogling at numerous humpback whales on the aquarium whale watching trip later in the day, we decided that all the Scooba costumes should be some sort of fish or aquatic creature. Our first two ScooBud costumes are hereby christened Sooshi the Goldfish and Toothy the Killer Whale.

We really like both of the little guys and are starting to think that they should be "ported" over to the Roomba so that more people (2 million Roomba sold vs 50 thousand or so Scoobas) can have Sooshi running around their house.

Did you name your Scooba?

It's interesting. Our iRobot Scooba does it's job in a similar way to our Roombas. The myRoomBud Crew has created ScooBud costumes for the Scooba, an orca whale and a gold fish to follow an aquatic theme. With all of this, we do not feel the same attachment to the Scooba as we do the Roomba. It may be that the Roomba was a new "thing" that we had never seen and the Scooba is just yet another one. It may be how the Scooba plods along the floor at a snail's pace. It may be that we only pull out the Scooba once a week vs almost every day for the Roomba. Just don't know but like I said, we just do not have that same feeling about the Scooba as we do the Roomba.

RoomBud sightings at Niagara Falls

So we went of vacation, and while visiting Niagara Falls, I swore that I saw something that looked like a small circular cow going over the falls in a barrel. Hmmmm. Could it be? No way. Maybe. Mooba the daredevil RoomBud? I know that iRobot sells Roomba vacuums in Canada because we have a reseller RobotShop.ca selling RoomBud costumes there so it is possible that Mooba was up there on a business trip. We are developing our film from the trip and should have a picture of the incident.

RoomBud Personalities powered by Microsoft Robotics Studio ?

So we downloaded and are working with the Micorosoft Robotics Studio. Looks pretty cool and should work out well for the kind of applications that we are creating. Everything we write will be running on the PC and controlling the Roomba through bluetooth so the fact that MRS is "heavy" will not be a problem. The coolest piece of the application looks to be remotely controlling the Roomba over the web. Not sure how practical that is but when has the kids at myRoomBud done anything that was practical. Just plain cool.

Oh ya, and what do you think we have to do to get this stuck on our web site.

Our RoomBud videos have been watched over 5000 times!

We love it. 5000 is a pretty big number and the Roor the Tiger personality video with voice recognition is the fifth (soon to be fourth) most watched Roomba video out there. Even the iRobot Roomba promo videos have not been watched that much.

Roobit to appear at Robo Business 2006 June 20-21 in Pittsburgh

So eventhough none of the myRoomBud kids could make it to RoboBusiness 2006, Roobit the Frog will be showing off the RoomBud costumes. Fred Nikgohar from RoboDynamics will be showing off Roobit and all the Robo Dynamics products. We use a RooTooth bluetooth dongle for our wireless connection to the Roombas. With all of our iRobot Roomba hacking and programming, we decided that there should be a word to describe all the work that is being done. Roomba hacking is fine, but hacking always has a bit of a negative connotation. To help legitimatize all the hard work done by all the Roomba hackers out there, we needed a mainstream way to describe the work. It really is just a marketing game just like when goverment people talk about the "death tax" vs. "inheritence tax".

As always myRoomBud is at the forefront of roombatics study.

Dr. Roolittle - talk to your Roomba

If we could talk to the Roombas, just imagine it

What a neat achievement that would be.

Well we actually did it. Added voice recognition to the myRoomBud Is Alive Dashboard. So over the weekend, we talked to our Roomba and it talked back. Say "hello" and it comes alive and respons "hello, what can I do for you." Ask it to hop or roar or wiggle and it does just that. Of course if you tell it to "Clean" it will shake it's head 'NO' and say you "you have to say please" If you say "Please" it will go and vacuum your room.

I think we may have taken a step too far over the edge with this one. Hackaing away using a RooTooth and the Roomba SCI, we have added personalities to the RoomBud characters. Roobit the Frog hops around before it vacuums. Hop to it Roobit. Roor the Tiger will roar, stalk and pounce. RoomBette La French Maid saunters up to you, turns and wiggles its butt before heading of to work. The myRoomBud Is Alive Dashboard or MIAD (pronounced 'maid') allows anyone with a RooTooth or other bluetooth interface to give your Roomba personality.

Our first French Maid RoomBud sold in France

Well it took a while, but we finally sold a RoomBette La French Maid costume to someone in France. We were beginning to wonder if iRobot had not sold any Roomba vacuums there. Birth certificates for your iRobot Roomba Vacuuming Robot!

So for all you giddy parents of a Roomba robot, you really need to get an (un)official birth certificate for your little bundle of joy. Without a Roomba birth certificate, you will not be able to get a social security number for it, a passport for it, get a driver's license for it or even sign it up to play little league! So the myRoomBud kids wrote Danial Wilson, the guy who wrote the book, and it turns out that he knew about the RoomBuds. Mr. Wilson is now the proud owner of one of the new Spring collection RoomBuds. The kids loved the book but shouldn't it be How to survive a RoomBud uprising? I know that there have been a few times that our Roomba escaped by evading the virtual wall because the batteries were low or our cat bumped the virtual wall or whatever and we had to search all over the house for it. One time we found it hiding behind the toilet. I hope that iRobot adds a gps to the Roomba that we can track its migration path.

Lucky the Ladybug and FooFoo the WereRabbit have been spotted roaming eBay, Amazon and our web site. These are just too cute for words.

The spring RoomBud collection should help in our goal of clothing every Naked Roomba on the planet. The idea of clothing every Roomba Vacuuming Robot came after the Isabelle reread one of the Harry Potter books. Isabelle said she wanted to be just like Hermione Granger and her S.P.E.W. April 1, 2006 - (eNewsWire) - IRS announces that a RoomBud ( a clothed iRobot Roomba Robotic Vacuum ) residing at your place of residency can be declared a dependant on your tax filings if the following conditions apply:

1) You have named your Roomba
2) You have talked to your Roomba
3) Spent more time watching your Roomba than it would take you to vacuum the room(ba)
4) Have clothed your Roomba with at least one RoomBud costume

The one exception is RoomBette La French Maid must be noted as an employee of the household and have social security taxes declared.

Roomba owners who purchase a RoomBud cover before April 15 may use the RoomBud dependent for the 2006 tax year.

A RoomBud costume for the iRobot PackBot? The Roomba and possibly the Scooba but the PackBot? With so much news about the PackBots lately we have received some emails saying we should make a RoomBud cover for the PackBot. Their is a history of tanks and airplanes having faces on them so why not the PackBots? Well if anyone out there has a PackBot and would like a RoomBud cover for it, give us a yell and we'll make one for you.

It's spring and the RoomBugs are coming

Since spring has sprung, we have RoomBug RoomBud costumes are in the works. We have heard from more than a few Roomba owners that they want to turn their Roombas into bugs. Why? Well they sort of look like bugs. Hmmm. Considering that the people over at iRobot modelled the workings of their robots after bugs, it does sort of make sense. Roomba Frogger - way cool - play it here

So we saw the articles about Phillip Torrone and Limor Fried playing Roomba Frogger and thought that was really funny except we really didn't know what frogger was until our Dad told us it was a video game he used to play when he was a kid. He also showed us a frogger game with Roobit the Frog RoomBud as the little frog running across the street. I wonder if this is why so many people have been buy Roobit lately?

Sunday Paper - Front page business section - big pictures - life is good

So the article starts out like this:

"Griffin is six years old, and he's already COO of a company that's raked in thousands of dollars in revenue. So, what are you doing with your life?"

Last week we had Tom Spoth and Jon Hill from the Lowell Sun newspaper come to the myRoomBud factory for an interview. Blogs about RoomBuds just want to make me sing!!!

blog blog blog blog - blog blog blog blog - sung like a real viking (if you have to ask, go watch Monty Python).

Wow! Just this week we had hundreds of blogs refer to the RoomBud costumes. With just one blog Making Light, there were 54 comments made just with the statement "Costumes for your Roomba and a link to the myRoomBud.com site and over 1000 people jump to the check out the RoomBuds from the blog. Blogs about Tivos, cocker spanials, comic books, ... you name it and someone is refering to the Roomba costumes.

We also had two articles in the Boston Globe business section and were interviewed by the Lowell Sun for an article this week as well. Looks like iRobot is starting to see a whole business grow up around the Roomba just like all those add on products for the Apple iPod. Even the MIT Technology Review is mentioning the RoomBud costumes in their interview with Helen Greiner. iRobot rocks! Last week we the myRoomBud crew visited iRobot, Thanks Sharon. We met Helen Greiner and Colin Angle. They were really nice. They even brought us soda and cookies. Ms. Greiner talked to us about how iRobot started and how she became interested in robots. We saw some people working with the Roombas, checked out the big robot Gator cart, and were able to see some of the PackBots running around. Griffin asked if Santa Claus could bring him a PackBot for Christmas. We then talked a bit about our RoomBud costumes for the Roombas with the marketing person, Thanks Nancy! At the end, we heard the iRobot historian, she's a professional story teller, tell us the real story behind iRobot, Thanks Laura. Did you know that the first Roomba (sort of) was made from Legos and a bottle brush?

Happy New Year to All! 2006 started out with a bang. Two of the most requested RoomBuds have been added: Roobit the Frog and Slops the Pig. To help the migration of the RoomBuds, we openned up shop on Amazon.com making it that much easier to pick up all your Roomba essentials all at on place, new Roomba for Mom, Roomba batteries for Dad, a couple of virtual walls for brother Bill, a Scooba for Aunt May, and of course lots and lots of RoomBuds for everyone.

What an amazing few weeks. We would like to thank everyone who bought a RoomBud, emailed us with suggestions, gave us best wishes, or blogged us. The RoomBud crew will be taking a vacation to go visit ( Grandma and Grandpa ) * 2, so we will not have any RoomBuds up on eBay for a week or so. Rumor has it that a few new RoomBuds will be unvailed in 2006.

So check this out. We are off to see the Wizard(s), I mean the founders of iRobot. Turns out that the people who created the Roomba know about the RoomBuds and have invited us to visit them at the iRobot headquarters. Talk about cool.

Welcome to the myRoomBud blog.

With so many people asking us questions and wishing us the best, we figured that a blog might be a great way to get to know everyone. Thank you everyone who has adopted a RoomBud lately. I'm sure they are going to good homes. If you have an idea for a new RoomBud, post it here and we will go out on an expedition and possibly find it or make it ... sort of reminds me of John Hammond in Jurassic Park.

A special thanks t0 the crew at iRobot. A world without Roombas is a world without RoomBuds.
